g-2 ― 頂点補正の新しい計算g−2 — A New Calculation of the Vertex Correction
The research theme page traced a 90-year-old problem: how "infinity" appears in quantum field theory calculations.
Along the way, most of the calculations involving electrons and photons were confirmed to have no divergence in the actual observable. But one problem remained.

Perhaps the Observable Has No Divergence After All"
Infinity can appear partway through a calculation. But the physical quantity we actually observe is always finite. From that simple fact, one question took shape.
Nishijima's Calculation
In his π0→2γ calculation, Nishijima suggested that, even with a divergent self-energy, the physically observed quantity might carry no divergence at all.

That same year, the opposite result — a divergence — was published under the name "chiral anomaly," and the problem grew more entangled.
Fujita and Colleagues on the Triangle Diagram
Fujita and colleagues reexamined the triangle-diagram calculation.
Z0 → γ + γZ0 → γ + γ
Fujita, Kanda, and colleagues showed every triangle diagram involving this process to be free of divergences.
Through this history, the question "perhaps the observable has no divergence at all" gradually took on a clearer shape.
The One Problem Left
But Not Everything Was Settled Yet
Fujita, Kanda, and colleagues' work resolved several divergence problems tied to the triangle diagram. But one calculation had been left untouched.
When an electron interacts with a photon, quantum effects can add one more photon at the point of interaction — the "vertex." Recalculating the interaction with this extra photon included is called the "vertex correction."
Among these vertex corrections, the one tied to the electron's magnetic property, g−2, was long held to carry a logarithmic divergence.
Could the same question be applied to this one remaining case?
What Is g−2?
The Electron as a Tiny Magnet
The electron behaves, in part, like a tiny magnet.
The number describing how strong that magnet is is called the g-factor.
g is close to 2, but quantum effects shift it slightly away from exactly 2.
Calculating that tiny shift — g−2 — and comparing it with experiment has been an active field for decades.
Why Does "Infinity" Appear?
In the Conventional Calculation, the Vertex Correction Diverges
In 1948, Schwinger produced the first calculation of the electron's g−2, arriving at the small value α/2π — a result that came to symbolize the success of QED.
But the vertex correction inside that calculation, using the conventional photon propagator, carries a logarithmic divergence. Until now, that divergence has been dealt with through "renormalization" — a procedure for extracting a finite answer from a divergent calculation.
But why does this calculation produce infinity in the first place?
Reconsidering Where the Calculation Starts
Not Processing the Divergence — Asking Why It Appears
Rather than letting the divergence appear and then processing it through renormalization, this research reconsidered the calculation's own starting point — specifically, the photon propagator, reworked from the photon's own equation of motion.
Starting from the photon's equation of motion gives the following condition.
Starting from a photon propagator that satisfies this condition, the electron's vertex correction was recalculated.
For ordinary electron-electron scattering, this propagator gives exactly the same result as the conventional one. The difference only shows up in more intricate processes like the vertex correction. A full technical treatment, with the relevant equations and Feynman diagrams, is available in the paper linked below.

The Difference Between Conventional Renormalization and This Calculation
Using this propagator to calculate the vertex correction, the ultraviolet divergence seen in the conventional calculation did not appear — a finite result came out directly.

What This Research Shows
One Concrete Answer — and Not More Than That
This result is one concrete example showing that a different way of thinking about the divergences in quantum field theory is possible.
It is not a rejection of QED, nor a claim to have fully resolved the problem of divergences. What it shows is narrower: that in one previously unresolved case — the g−2 vertex correction — a finite result could be derived.

This research has offered one answer to that question, through the concrete calculation of the g−2 vertex correction.
So — does quantum field theory really need "infinity" at all? That larger question remains open.

A Novel Calculation of Vertex Corrections of Leptons
Using a photon propagator satisfying the condition k·ε=0, required by the photon's equation of motion (∂μFμν=0), this paper calculates the lepton vertex correction. It shows the electron-photon vertex correction is free of ultraviolet divergence, obtaining (3/4)(α/2π) as a finite correction to the un-renormalized γρ vertex.
