Is Infinity Really Necessary?
Rethinking Quantum Field Theory from First Principles
In quantum field theory, calculations sometimes produce "infinity" partway through.
To deal with that infinity, 20th-century physics established a method called "renormalization." Through it, QED became a theory that matches experiment to a remarkable degree of precision.
But one question remains. Why does infinity appear in the first place?
問いThe Question
Why Does Infinity Show Up in the Calculation?
The physical quantities we observe in nature are always finite. And yet, at a certain stage of the theoretical calculation, infinity appears. This problem has existed for as long as QED itself.
Infinity does not exist in nature — it appears inside the theory's calculation. So what does that actually mean?

The Birth of QED, the Problem of Infinity, and Renormalization
QEDの誕生The Birth of QED
In 1928, Dirac discovered the relativistic equation of motion for the electron. In 1929, Heisenberg and Pauli established the framework for treating the electromagnetic interaction as a full quantum theory — QED.
The Problem of Infinity
Calculating the self-energy of the electron or photon was found to produce infinity. Oppenheimer showed this in 1930, and Weisskopf clarified it further in 1934.
Renormalization Theory
Tomonaga, Schwinger, Feynman, and Dyson established "renormalization" — a method for absorbing infinity into redefinitions of mass and charge, removing it from the observable quantity.

From Divergence to the Last Remaining Point
From the birth of QED to today, here is the history of this question about infinity, traced year by year.
The Dirac Equation and the Birth of QED
(1930)。Dirac discovered the electron's equation of motion (1928); Heisenberg and Pauli established the foundations of QED (1929). Around the same time, Oppenheimer first pointed out the divergence in the electron's self-energy (1930).
The Divergence Is Pinned Down
Weisskopf, correctly accounting for the positron, showed the electron's self-energy diverges only logarithmically, and also uncovered a quadratic divergence in the photon's self-energy.
Renormalization Theory Takes Shape
朝永(1943)、Schwinger(1948)、Feynman(1948)がそれぞれ共変的な計算手法を確立し、Dyson(1949)がこれらの等価性を証明。 Tomonaga (1943), Schwinger (1948), and Feynman (1948) each established covariant calculational methods, and Dyson (1949) proved their equivalence. A complete system for removing infinity from observables was now in place (the three shared the 1965 Nobel Prize).
g-2、最初の計算g−2, the First Calculation
Schwinger produced the first calculation of the electron's anomalous magnetic moment (g−2), giving α/2π — but the photon vertex correction inside it retained a logarithmic divergence.
Nishijima, and a Fork in the Road
In Fields and Particles, Nishijima carried out an exact calculation of the triangle diagram, obtaining a finite result reproducing π0→2γ. That same year, Adler, and separately Bell and Jackiw, derived the opposite — a divergent — result under the name "chiral anomaly," which took hold widely from there.
Fujita and Colleagues Reopen the Question
Fujita raised the possibility of a problem in Adler's calculation in his 2007 book. In 2011, Fujita, Kanda, and colleagues' "T-matrix of Z0 Decay into Two Photons" showed every triangle diagram — including Z0→2γ — to be free of divergences, confirming Nishijima's result. Even so, the vertex correction relevant to g−2 still carried a logarithmic divergence.
Bringing the Work Together
Fujita and Kanda's Fundamental Problems in Quantum Field Theory drew this work together systematically. What remained was down to a single case: the photon vertex correction — the g−2 calculation.
My Research
I am revisiting the photon propagator from first principles and reexamining the divergence problem in this vertex correction. The sections below describe what that involves.
Self-Energy and the Observable
Is the Infinity in the Calculation the Same as What We Observe?
In QED, a calculation called "self-energy" arises — a particle interacting with itself — and it diverges. But self-energy itself is not a directly observed quantity. What matters is whether infinity survives in the quantity that is actually observed.
Only once a photon (or similar) exits the diagram does it connect to something observable — and only then can the divergence actually matter.

Nishijima's Calculation
His π0→2γ calculation suggested that, even with a divergent self-energy, the physically observed quantity might carry no divergence at all.

The opposite result — a divergence — was published under the name "chiral anomaly," and the problem grew more entangled.
Fujita and Colleagues on the Triangle Diagram
Fujita and colleagues reexamined the triangle-diagram calculation.
Z0 → γ + γZ0 → γ + γ
Fujita, Kanda, and colleagues showed every triangle diagram involving this process to be free of divergences.
Across this history, one question keeps resurfacing: does an observed physical quantity really need to carry a divergence?
The One Problem Left
g-2 / 頂点補正 (vertex correction)g−2 / The Vertex Correction
Among the vertex corrections tied to the electron's self-energy, the most important is the electron's anomalous magnetic moment, g−2.
Schwinger's 1948 calculation stands as one of the results that made QED's success. But using the conventional Feynman photon propagator, the vertex correction calculation produces a logarithmic divergence.
Why does infinity appear in the calculation of a quantity we actually observe?
Revisiting the Photon Propagator
Reconsidering the Photon Propagator from Zero
Starting from the photon's equation of motion gives the following condition.
Starting from a photon propagator that satisfies this condition, I recalculated the electron's vertex correction. The result: the ultraviolet divergence that appeared in the conventional calculation does not show up — pointing to the possibility of a finite result without renormalization at all.
This is the core of the research. A full technical treatment, with the relevant equations and Feynman diagrams, is available in the paper linked below.

最後にIn Closing
Does nature really
need "infinity" at all?
Rather than processing an infinity that appears midway through the calculation — could a theory be built from the start so that the physical observable simply comes out finite?
Pursuing this question, I believe, is what it means to rethink quantum field theory from first principles, once again. That is my current research.
